Proven single-contact IDC connector range now offers PTH terminations

Latest from AVX is a new single-contact, wire-to-board (WTB) insulation displacement connector (IDC) with plated through hole (PTH) terminations. The newcomer is based on the company's proven 9176 Series, which prior to the addition, was exclusively comprised of surface mount technology (SMT) connectors. Delivering the same features and benefits for which the 9176 Series is known - including a gas-tight connection to the PCB for long-term reliability, preassembled strain relief caps with through-wire or end-stop configurations for maximum flexibility, reduced cost compared to hand soldering and two-piece connector options, and the tested ability to withstand automotive levels of shock, vibration, and temperature cycling - the new single tine 9176-60X PTH connector provides a high performance WTB solution capable of satisfying the demanding cost versus performance objectives for divisions of the industrial control, SSL, smart grid, medical, and transportation markets that utilize leaded components. Rated for 600VAC, and capable of accepting 24–18AWG solid or stranded wires with 5–9A current ratings, the new single tine 9176 Series PTH connector also meets or exceeds the performance specifications of the only competing connector on the market in a form factor that is 13% lower profile, 30% shorter, and 68% more narrow. "The volumetric savings that our new 9176 PTH IDC connector provides in comparison with the only other discrete wire PTH IDC connector on the market is hugely significant for development engineers with limited length, width, and height requirements, which are increasingly common in newer technologies due to the popularity of smaller and sleeker end products," said Tom Anderson, product manager at AVX. “"A few insulator-less PTH IDC contacts from another manufacturer are also available on the market, but they are made from 260 brass instead of phosphor bronze with tin over nickel plating, like the 9176 Series, so they don't compare with regard to performance." ” Compatible with potting and over-moulding for sealed or waterproof environments, featuring a robust, reliable design with proven gas-tight connections, and rated for operating temperatures spanning -40C to +125C, 9176-60X PTH connectors are ideal for a wide variety of rugged applications, including: machine controls, such as motors, drives, solenoids, sensors, fans, and pumps; commercial building controls, such as security alarms, fire alarms, and sensors; transportation applications, such as console, police, and emergency lighting; medical equipment, such as patient monitoring and drug dispensing devices; smart grid meters, breakers, and panels; and SSL bulbs, fixtures, signage, and streetlights. RoHS compliant and certified to both UL and CAN/CSA C22.2, the new 9176 Series PTH connectors are available for immediate product integration, and are packaged on tape and reel for automated placement, says the company.
