High-performance IMU for virtual and augmented reality applications

Bosch Sensortec has launched the BMI085, a high-performance six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The device integrates a three-axis, 16-bit MEMS acceleration sensor and a three-axis, 16-bit MEMS gyroscope in a single compact unit. This powerful IMU is perfectly suited for demanding VR and AR applications and other applications, such as body/human motion tracking, navigation and high-end gaming. The compact MEMS sensor package is filled with features, combining an extremely low-drift gyroscope with a low-noise accelerometer to greatly reduce the unpleasant motion sickness effect. Its ultra-precise immediate detection of head movements decreases time lag to an almost undetectable minimum. Thus, electronic device manufacturers can create a more genuine and immersive VR and AR experience that allows headset users to engage their virtual environments for greater periods without needing frequent breaks. "High-performance AR/VR applications demand extremely sensitive, precise, robust and responsive motion sensors," says Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO at Bosch Sensortec. "With the Bosch BMI085, the user can enjoy a much more realistic and pleasant experience in the exciting worlds of virtual and augmented reality, without the negative physical effects."
