Clock generators and buffers offer forward compatibility

Diodes Incorporated has released the company's first families of clock generators and clock buffers that satisfy PCIe 5.0 specifications while still complying with PCIe 4.0 and past generations. This provides product developers with the forward compatibility they need when creating server, storage, and networking equipment for datacentres that currently use PCIe 4.0 but need to be ready for the widespread roll-out of PCIe 5.0.

The PI6CG33xxxC family of PCIe clock generators and the PI6CB33xxxx family of PCIe clock buffers, including eight and nine devices, respectively, provide an extensive variety of options, such as number of outputs and output impedance. The devices all highlight on-chip termination, eliminating the necessity for external termination resistors and therefore saving BoM costs and board space.

The PCIe clock solutions provide low jitter concerning both PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 versions of the PCIe specification, providing designers with an easier route to higher performance as the market shifts towards higher data rates and as their products evolve.

To further ease the design process, the devices in the families offer programmable slew rate and output amplitude on each output, giving a high degree of flexibility and supporting different board layouts. This programmability assists developers in achieving optimal performance under increasingly challenging design conditions.
