The ams AS8579 Sensor Interface identifies the capacity change in various applications and measures the relative change of the impedance, dependent on the circuit. The device is available now from Mouser.

The sensor is employed for human being detection and many other applications. The IC captures the current of a metal object and implements algorithms to determine the capacitive and resistive information (impedance). This information can be read by an SPI interface that can also be employed for IC configuration.

The device provides accurate capacitive measurement (including resistive information) and I/Q-signal demodulation. The device offers higher durability and lower system costs. The VAR&FIX_SEN function helps avoid parasitic influences from cable and PCB. There is an enabler for safety-critical applications. The device is suitable for automotive applications and is AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified.

Typical applications include autonomous driving applications; detection of any human presence inside a vehicle; and detection of any human presence exterior of vehicles.
