SMD ceramic safety capacitors deliver industry-high capacitance

Vishay Intertechnology offers a new series of surface-mount AC line rated ceramic disc safety capacitors that are the industry's first devices to provide a Y1 rating of 500VAC and 1500VDC. Created to withstand harsh, high humidity environments, the Vishay BCcomponents SMDY1 series devices provide industry-high capacitance to 4.7nF.

The capacitors can be employed for EMI/RFI filtering in power supplies, solar inverters, smart meters, and LED drivers. For these applications, the nearest competing devices offer capacitance up to 1.5nF and Y1 ratings to 300VAC, with no DC rating. Also, the series provides higher humidity resistance with a Class IIB humidity grade (in accordance with IEC60384-14 annexe I) and a moisture sensitivity level of 2a.

Providing for surface-mount assembly with a reflow soldering process, the series capacitors lessen production costs. Compared to through-hole devices, they provide a lower profile and remove the necessity for clearance space on the PCB's backside. RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, the components comprise a copper-plated ceramic disc and offer encapsulation made of flame-resistant epoxy resin in accordance with UL 94 V-0.
