TDK Corporation has extended its range of CeraLink capacitors. Previously, only large, ready-to-fit sizes were offered. Now, smaller versions with the classic chip design are incorporated in the portfolio to increase the areas of application. The new portfolio starts with the EIA 2220 size, measuring 5.7mm x 5mm x 1.4mm, is intended for 500V, and provides a capacitance of 250nF with very low parasitic coefficients. The new capacitors, B58043*, are provided with both standard and soft termination.
At room temperature, the ESR at 1MHz is just 40mOhm, and the ESL is 3nH, with the values yet lower at higher temperatures. A high current capability of up to 9ARMS is obtained at 200kHz and 25C ambient temperature. The permissible temperature range lies between -40C and +150C.
Typical applications employ the smaller designs in snubber or output capacitors. Due to its smaller dimensions, the new SMD variant can be placed still closer to fast-switching power semiconductors such as IGBT modules, SiC-based or GaN-based semiconductors. Together the low ESL values, the lead inductance is kept very low.
CeraLink capacitors are based on PLZT ceramics (lead lanthanum zirconate titanate). In contrast to traditional ceramic capacitors, their maximum capacitance is at operating voltage and even increases as the ratio of the ripple voltage increases.
