Four-terminal Kelvin shunts for high-end data servers

High-efficiency applications like high-end data servers rely on low resistance values to minimise wasted power. Sensing accuracy becomes difficult when the application utilises a value of 5mOhm or less due to the considerable impact of lead resistance. However, a four-terminal shunt resistor effectively eradicates the detrimental effects of lead resistance on current sensing measurements.

Stackpole Electronic’s HCSK2725 provides engineers with a solution to overcome the obstacles of accurate sensing measurement in low-value applications. The device features a raised element to lower terminal temperature and lower thermal impact on the PCB. Moreover, it provides a small footprint and up to 5W power ratings in resistance values as low as 0.2milliohm, ensuring maximum sensing efficiency at high server current loads. With a low TCR of 50ppm, the HCSK2725 also minimises the effects of temperature on sensing accuracy. Its all-metal element and welded construction supply excellent pulse handling capabilities.
