New Ku-band SATCOM delivers superior performances

25-06-2024 | Qorvo | Power

Qorvo has released three new MMIC power amplifiers designed specifically for Ku-Band SATCOM terminals. These products are the latest additions to a family of devices developed to improve performance and efficiency in satellite uplink systems, supporting the growing demand for high-speed data communications in defence and aerospace applications. The amplifier family's output power varies from 8W to 55W, delivering flexibility to select the optimal power needed for each specific need.

The QPA1314 is a high-power MMIC amplifier operating in the 13.75GHz to 14.5GHz range. It delivers a saturated output power of 55W and a linear power of 20W with 25dBc third-order intermodulation distortion products. It is packaged in a 15mm x 15mm bolt-down configuration with a copper base for superior thermal performance and reliability. With a large signal gain of 22.5dB and 30% power-added efficiency, it is ideal for commercial and defence SATCOM and radar applications.

The QPA0016 is designed for applications needing 15W of output power. This amplifier combines high efficiency with a compact 7.5mm x 5mm SMT package, making it ideal for various satellite terminal designs.

The QPA0015 amplifier delivers 8W of power in a 7mm x 4.5mm SMT package for high-throughput ground and mobile terminals, balancing power, size, and efficiency.

Doug Bostrom, general manager of Qorvo's Defence and Aerospace business, said, "Qorvo is excited to introduce our latest offerings, which open up new possibilities in datalinks, radar and satellite communications. With over two decades of experience providing SATCOM solutions, we have worked closely with design engineers who drive SATCOM advancements. Based on their valuable input, our new amplifier family represents the next logical step in advancing these designs."

All three amplifiers have a wide frequency range and operate primarily in the 13.75GHz to 14.5GHz band, with extended frequency coverage from 12.75GHz to 15.35GHz to deliver coverage ranging from lower Ku-band to CDL band. This wide frequency range ensures versatile and flexible operation, allowing seamless communication across various satellite and terrestrial systems.

These high-efficiency amplifiers provide up to 12% higher power-added efficiency, enhancing overall performance and reducing power consumption in SATCOM systems.

The variety of compact package sizes, including bolt-down and surface-mount options, makes it easy to integrate into existing and new terminal designs, supporting traditional and innovative ground terminal applications.

The QPA1314's copper base and the compact designs of the QPA0016 and QPA0015 provide superior thermal performance, ensuring reliability and longevity in demanding environments.

Samples of the devices are now available.
