Thin film wide termination chip resistors for precision high power applications

09-10-2024 | Stackpole | Passives

For precision applications needing automotive-grade surface mount chip resistors with high power demands, self-heating often leads to elevated circuit temperatures. Wide terminations provide an efficient and cost-effective solution for minimising power-related heat. By reversing the chip resistor's geometry and placing the terminations along its long sides, the hot spot temperature is lowered by 30% to 40%.

Stackpole Electronics's RNWA series is available in these size/power rating combinations: 0612 rated at 1W, 1020 rated at 1.5W, and 1225 rated at 2W.

The series operates at cooler temperatures, is anti-sulphur, and provides precision tolerances as low as 0.1% and TCR down to 25ppm. Its lower thermal resistance provides stable and reliable performance at full power. These characteristics make the series ideal for precision, high-power applications such as EV power systems, electric power trains, medical devices, and precision industrial and motor control.
