Strategies for Success: Sfera Labs' Guide to Electronic Component Procurement and Sustainability

20-02-2024 | By Jack Pollard

In a recent interview with Electropages, Sfera Labs shared valuable insights on how the electronic components supply chain is evolving in the face of global events and what the future holds for 2024.

They discussed strategies for managing supply chain disruptions, emerging market trends, cost-effective procurement practices, combating counterfeit components, and the importance of environmental and regulatory compliance. This conversation highlights Sfera Labs' commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation, offering a glimpse into it's approach to navigating the complexities of the electronics industry.

With a focus on practical advice and forward-looking strategies, part 1 of this Q&A is a must-read for professionals looking to stay ahead in the rapidly changing world of electronic components.

Supply Chain Management

How are current global events impacting the electronic components supply chain, and what changes are anticipated in 2024?

Currently, there are no significant shortages in the supply of electronic components. On the contrary, most suppliers have delivered all the backlogged orders of the last couple of years (and more) all at the same time during 2023. As a result, companies face steep financial challenges, and 2023 order volumes have dropped. Therefore, suppliers now have their warehouses full and are announcing production cuts. Should the market resume growing, there may be a new contraction towards the end of 2024.

What strategies can buyers employ to mitigate supply chain disruptions now and in the future?

Mitigation strategies may include standardisation of BOMs on the smallest possible set of components, preferably the ones with many alternatives. Another mitigation strategy is raising the stock levels whenever financially or fiscally possible. Suppliers’ diversification does not always help mitigate supply chain disruption, but it may sometimes help.

The consensus is that “globalisation,” as it was intended before the pandemic, is now considered too risky by most small and medium businesses. At Sfera Labs, we manufacture all our products in Italy, in a radius of less than 100 km from our headquarters. This allows us to manufacture smaller lots at competitive prices, a winning strategy in times of global instability.

Market Trends and Forecasts

What are the current and emerging trends in the electronic component markets, and what are the projections for 2024?

The risks of new cycles of unbalance between demand and supply are not over. Political uncertainty and instability in several critical geographies may still cause significant disruption at any time and with little warning. Besides this, demand and supply may continue to oscillate as a long-term consequence of the disruption we've had in the past. It is like when you have a traffic jam on a highway. When the initial issue is removed, traffic doesn't immediately start flowing smoothly, but you see stop-and-go traffic going on for a long time.

How is the demand for specific components like semiconductors expected to evolve in the coming year?

A lot of companies over-purchased, and likely have internal stock levels way over their comfort zone. This could cause a drop in demand. This also has an impact on product innovation. When we were experiencing the supply crunch, innovation was hampered by the lack of new components. Now it could be slowed down because manufacturers of electronic products may have to get rid of components stock that they have accumulated.

Cost Management and Price Trends

What are the best practices for cost-effective procurement in electronics for the current market and future predictions?

At Sfera Labs, we purchase the key electronic components in our product directly, preferably from the manufacturer or primary distributors. Of course, this requires us to be financially sound, as it involves a substantial capital investment with a relatively slow rotation. Coupled with the standardisation of the BOMs I mentioned in a previous question, it helps us negotiate better prices and optimise stock levels.

How are price trends for key electronic components expected to change in 2024?

Prices are dropping slightly from the heights of 2022/2023. Prices may continue going down if the demand does not resume, which is the most likely scenario, but will probably remain higher than before the pandemic.

Quality Assurance and Counterfeit Components

In the context of quality assurance, how can buyers identify and protect themselves against counterfeit electronic components, and what role does technological innovation play in this?

At Sfera Labs, we purchase the key electronic components in our products directly, preferably from the manufacturer or primary distributors, ensuring that we buy up-to-date, correctly stored components.

How do buyers ensure the reliability of components amidst the rise of counterfeit parts in the market?

On the very rare occasions in which we purchase from secondary distributors, we always choose top and respected companies. They perform severe tests on the inbound lots and guarantee 100% refund in case of anomalies. We encourage buyers to purchase from authorised and well-researched companies while staying vigilant.

Environmental and Regulatory Compliance

What should buyers know about compliance with international standards now and in the upcoming year?

For every company, and indeed for Sfera Labs, it is vital to be always up to date with international standards, particularly regarding compliance and environmental regulations. Always more often, customers require formal certifications that products comply with international and local regulations.

Complexity is constantly growing over time, and our concern is about the long-term ability of small and medium electronic product manufacturers to be able to sustain the increasing workload and costs.

Conclusion

As we wrap up Part 1 of our in-depth discussion with Sfera Labs, it's clear that the electronic components industry is at a pivotal juncture. Facing global uncertainties, supply chain challenges, and the drive for environmental & regulatory compliance, Sfera Labs' strategies offer valuable lessons on resilience and innovation. It's commitment to quality, strategic procurement, and environmental compliance not only sets a benchmark for the industry but also charts a path forward for navigating the complexities of tomorrow's market dynamics.

Looking ahead to Part 2, you can expect insight into vendor relationship management, innovative responses to component obsolescence, and the pivotal role of data analytics in procurement. Sfera Labs will also share its anticipation of customer demand shifts in 2024, alongside its commitment to quality, sustainability, and the introduction of ground breaking products designed to address the evolving needs of the industry.
