Torex Semiconductor Ltd. has released new load switch IC products, the XC8112/XC8113 series, which offer an ideal diode function.
The series replicates the characteristics of an ideal diode and is equipped with functions such as enable (EN), overcurrent protection, inrush current protection, and thermal shutdown. These ICs attain an ultra-low forward voltage (VF) of only 20mV through their ideal diode function, which is about 1/20th of the forward voltage typically found in Schottky barrier diodes used for reverse current protection, greatly extending battery life. Furthermore, despite the VF being as low as 20mV, the reverse current from VOUT to VIN remains at 0μA, truly embodying the characteristics of an ideal diode. These features make it straightforward to implement output OR circuits and effectively lower power consumption in backup battery applications.
The series uses constant current limiting and fold-back current limiting to manage overcurrent. The fold-back method limits short-circuit current to 50mA, permitting for safe operation even in short-circuit conditions. The thermal shutdown function prevents IC damage due to overheating. Also, the series is IEC62368-1:2023 certified as a current limiter, improving device safety and simplifying design.
The XC8112 series is equipped with 2ch 500mA load switches, making it appropriate for backup OR connections and multi-channel applications in small, power-saving uses. The XC8113 series offers 2ch 1A load switches, ideal for small, high-current applications and further reducing voltage drop (low ON resistance) through parallel connections (Figure 2).
The packaging uses a compact, low-height USP-8B06 (2mm x 2mm x h0.33mm), suited for applications with limited area and height.
