Magna-Power Electronics has released its new 500kW and 1MW ML Series water-cooled programmable DC power supply. The series builds on decades of high-power innovation, combining the company’s signature robust current-fed power processing topology with a state-of-the-art water-cooled design to achieve a nearly four-fold increase in power density compared to its air-cooled high-power solutions.
The new series spans 38 models at 500kW and 1MW power levels, with voltage ratings as high as 6000VDC (floating) and current ratings as high as 5000ADC. Power levels up to 10MW are attained using multiple products configured for high-performance master-slave parallel operation, wherein the master directly controls the gate drivers of slave units. The master-slave technique assures a single control loop in the system and consistent performance as the system scales.
The series uses 250kW power stages. Compared to alternative solutions that parallel many smaller modules, these larger power stages provide greatly decreased design and integration complexity, parts count, and switching devices (and potential points of failure), all while offering a substantially lower cost point. Also, the series includes the company’s harmonic neutraliser technology, which are specially wound magnetic components designed to passively cancel strings of harmonics to lower total harmonic distortion and increase power factor. The 500kW series models incorporate a 12-pulse harmonic neutraliser, while 1000kW series models include a 24-pulse harmonic neutraliser.
A SCPI command set is supported for control from virtually any programming language, including Python. Also, an IVI driver is included for the Visual Studio programming environment along with a dedicated National Instruments LabVIEW and LabWindows driver. The series comes with a serial interface with an optional LXI TCP/IP Ethernet (+LXI) interface.
