The TPSM846C23, from Texas Instruments, is a 35A fixed-frequency, PMBus-compliant, step-down power module, with PMBus commands that provide for the control, configuration, and monitoring of key power regulator functions. The module includes the controller, inductor, power MOSFETs, and other relevant components into a surface-mount package which is rugged and thermally enhanced. The user provides the input and output capacitors together with some other passive components to establish the operating parameters of the module. Two modules can be configured to work in parallel to provide up to a 70A, two-phase power solution.
The PMBus interface enables the converter configuration of output voltage, soft start, soft stop, UVLO, overcurrent, and thermal shutdown parameters. The interface also affords support for telemetry that reports the actual output current, output voltage, and device temperature. Standard PMBus warning and fault functions are supported, too. The device provides PMBus communication speeds up to 400kHz and supports a subset of the commands in the PMBus 1.3 specification.
The 15mm × 16mm component footprint is easy to solder onto a printed circuit board and allows a compact, point-of-load design.
