Littelfuse, Inc. has launched the Pxxx0S3G-A SIDACtor Protection Thyristor Series, the industry's first 2kA thyristors in a compact DO-214AB (SMC) package. The series, designed to safeguard equipment in harsh environments from severe overvoltage transients, allows engineers to attain greater product miniaturisation while maintaining superior protection and compliance with regulatory standards.

"The Pxxx0S3G-A Series delivers robust high surge current protection in a compact package, enabling designers to miniaturise their products without sacrificing reliability or compliance," said Charlie Cai, director of Product Marketing, Automotive TVS at Littelfuse. "This is especially valuable for applications exposed to high-energy surge events, including onboard chargers, EV charging stations, industrial automation power supplies, and solar inverters."

Compared to conventional solutions needing a larger TO-262 package, the DO-214AB's compact size permits for easier integration into space-constrained designs, including IoT devices, high-power density industrial equipment, and medical power supplies. Unlike legacy solutions that degrade over time, the new series sustains transients without degradation, providing long-term equipment protection and reducing maintenance costs. The series fully complies with AEC-Q101 standards, making it ideal for automotive applications such as OBC protection, BEV/PHEV protection, and automotive battery charging systems.

The series is engineered to provide robust protection in a variety of demanding environments, including EV Systems: It protects BEV and PHEV battery charging systems, as well as EV wall chargers from high-energy surge events. It also safeguards power supplies and high-power distribution grids in harsh operating conditions. The series ensures the reliability of solar system DC/AC inverters and energy storage systems that are exposed to fluctuating power surges. It also secures sensitive equipment in UPS and AC high-power distribution grids.

Legacy solutions often presented challenges due to the bulky design, which could degrade over time, lowering their protective efficacy. The Pxxx0S3G-A is more compact and delivers a surge rating ideal for highly exposed applications. It has a clear advantage over the Pxxx0FNL 3kA SIDACtor series in the TO-262M package, needing approximately 50% less PC board space.

This new product represents a leap forward. It is the first DO-214AB-sized product capable of handling a 2kA (8/20) surge. Before this advancement, attaining such a level of protection would require a much larger TO-262 package.
