Single-board computer offering expands with Intel compute sticks for Windows and Ubuntu Linux

RS Components has announced availability of a new ‘computer on a stick’ from Intel that provides the versatility to bring computing into new environments at home, in the office or on the go. Available in two versions, the Intel Compute Stick transforms any HDMI monitor or TV into a fully functional computer with a choice of operating systems: Windows 8.1 and 10, or Ubuntu Linux. The Compute Stick provides the same OS, high-quality graphics and wireless connectivity as a full-sized computer with ample speed and storage, but is much lower cost and very small, with dimensions of only 103mm x 37mm x 12mm. The Compute Stick delivers a mini PC that is reliable, looks like a large USB memory stick, and plugs into a display's HDMI socket, enabling users to have an office PC within seconds. The only extras needed are a mains power supply, included with the Compute Stick, plus wireless keyboard and mouse (not included in the package). The Compute Stick also has integrated Intel HD Graphics and WiFi (802.11bgn) and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. The Windows 8.1 OS (with free upgrade to Windows 10) version comes with 32GB eMMC Flash memory and 2GB DDR3L SDRAM; the Ubuntu Linux OS 14.04 version comes with 8GB eMMC Flash memory and 1GB DDR3L SDRAM. Files can be stored locally for quick access or the built-in wireless can be used to access files from a home network or the cloud. The quad-core Intel Atom processor provides enough performance for casual gaming; the USB 2.0 port allows connection to peripherals; the onboard storage ensures portability; and the microSD card slot provides for the option of additional storage. The Compute Stick has a security notch for securing to objects with a cable, ensuring that devices can only be moved when the user wishes. It also has an innovative cooling design via a tiny and quiet fan that enables reliable and fast performance. In addition to the power adapter, the Compute Stick is supplied with a microUSB cable for the power adapter, plus a 20cm HDMI extender cable and a quick-start poster guide, says the company.
