New step-down non-isolated DC-DC converters

TDK-Lambda has added two further models to its i6A series of step-down, non-isolated DC-DC converters. The i6A4W is capable of supplying currents of up to 20A, and the i6AN allows the creation of negative voltages delivering currents up to 8A. Both can be used in conjunction with the previously announced 14A rated i6A series to generate additional system voltages from a high power, single output AC-DC power supply. Applications include medical, communications, industrial, test and measurement, broadcast and portable equipment.

The compact, PCB mount DC-DC converters have the industry standard 1/16th brick footprint and measure just 33mm x 22.9mm x 12.7mm. Ultra-high efficiencies as high as 97% are achieved, allowing operation in ambient temperatures of -40C to +125C with the appropriate de-rating. The thermal design of the series allows for minimised output de-rating, even in low airflow and high ambient temperature conditions. The product’s optimised dynamic voltage response reduces the need for external capacitors, saving cost and board space.

The i6A4W output is adjustable from 3.3V to 15V and can operate from a wide range 9V to 53V input. This module can also be used as a drop-in replacement for expensive, isolated, 1/16th brick converters driving 12V POL devices from a regulated 48V input. The i6AN can generate negative polarity 3.3V to 30V outputs from a positive 9V to 40V input.

Standard features include a trim pin for output voltage adjustment, positive remote sense, remote on-off (positive or negative logic), input under-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection. Power good, operating frequency synchronisation and output sequencing are available as an option for the i6A4W.

Safety certification includes IEC/EN 60950-1, UL/CSA 60950-1 with CE marking for the Low Voltage and RoHS2 Directives, says the company.
