Bidirectional surge protection device protects systems from high-power transients

18-04-2019 | Texas Instruments | Power

Texas Instruments TVS1801 18V Bidirectional Surge Protection Device shunts up to 30A of IEC 61000-4-5 fault current to defend systems from lightning strikes or high-power transients. The device withstands the common industrial signal line EMC demand of 1kV IEC 61000-4-5 open circuit voltage coupled through a 42Ohm impedance. The device uses a feedback mechanism to guarantee precise flat clamping during a fault, keeping system exposure lower than conventional TVS diodes. The tight voltage regulation enables designers to assuredly select system components with a lower voltage tolerance, reducing system costs and complexity with no sacrifice to robustness. The device has a ±18V operating range to allow operation in systems that need protection against reverse wiring conditions. Typical application areas for the device include industrial sensors I/O, PLC I/O modules, SSDs, medical equipment, and 12V power lines. Attachments area
