Vishay Intertechnology has released two new surface-mount Automotive Grade silicon PIN photodiodes in a compact 0805 case size with a low 0.7mm profile – 0.15mm lower than past-generation devices. Provided in black packages, the opaque sidewalls of the Vishay Semiconductors VEMD4010X01 and VEMD4110X01 remove unwanted side illumination to improve their SNR.

The AEC-Q101-qualified photodiodes are optimised for photo detection in applications including solar load sensors; automotive rain, light, and tunnel sensors; and reflective sensors for touchless faucets, toilets, and trash cans; light barriers for elevators, garage doors, and industrial equipment. For the detection of visible and near-infrared radiation, the VEMD4010X01 provides a broad sensitivity range from 550nm to 1040nm. For 740nm to 1040nm infrared applications, the VEMD4110X01 offers a daylight blocking filter and is matched with 830nm to 950nm IR emitters.

Providing high sensitivity, the devices offer a sensitive area of 0.42mm², reverse light current of 2.4µA, and a low dark current of 1nA. The devices provide fast response times, ±60 degrees angles of half-sensitivity, a wide temperature range of -40C to +110C, and 910nm wavelengths of peak sensitivity. RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green, the photodiodes give a moisture sensitivity level of 3 in accordance with J-STD-020 for a floor life of 168 hours.
