The Nordic nPM1100 is a dedicated PMIC with a configurable dual-mode buck regulator and integrated battery charger. The device is available now from Rutronik. It is intended as a complementary component to Nordic's nRF52 and nRF53 series of SoCs to assure reliable power supply and stable operation while maximising battery life via high efficiency and low quiescent currents. It can also be employed as a generic PMIC device for any other suitable application. The remarkably compact (2.075mm x 2.075mm) WLCSP package is excellent for applications in wearables, connected medical devices, remote controls and game controllers, smart home sensors and controls, and other size constrained applications.
The integrated battery charger is intended to charge lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries to a selectable termination voltage of 4.1V or 4.2V. It supports cell chemistries with a nominal voltage of 3.6V or 3.7V, respectively. The unit provides thermal battery protection and automatic selection of three charging modes: automatic trickle charge, constant current and constant voltage.
The maximum charging current is selectable through a resistor from 20mA up to 400mA. The charger also provides a discharge current limiter and is JEITA compliant.
This high-efficiency step-down regulator can produce up to 150mA of current at a selectable output voltage of 1.8, 2.1, 2.7 or 3V. It provides soft start and automatic transition between hysteresis and PWM modes. It also facilitates a forced PWM mode to give clean operation.
The nPM1100 Evaluation Kit makes an uncomplicated evaluation of the PMIC and its functions possible - developers do not require their own test hardware.
