Smart heavy-duty encoders ideal for challenging applications

16-04-2025 | Baumer | Test & Measurement

The latest smart heavy-duty encoders developed by BAUMER are excellent for demanding industrial applications such as aggregates, steel, materials handling, ports, cranes, and paper mills. They also represent the ideal choice for monitoring applications, which include asynchronous motors. These uncompromisingly robust encoders are part of the incremental heavy-duty HOG800 series, which consists of three options.

Among the key features of these robust encoders is improved protection against corrosion, shaft currents, overvoltage and mechanical stress. Also, the company has adopted the ‘smart’ functions of its wider industrial encoder products into these heavy-duty options – for example, intelligent parameterisation of resolution, output level and rotation direction. New functions to monitor sensor status, temperature and operating time are also available.

An important feature of the HOG800 Series is its space-saving design with housings of just 84mm in width, which, along with a sealed and user-friendly design, allows easier on-site installation, even in demanding conditions. Another important benefit is the encapsulated sensing unit, which, during terminal box installation, is protected against ingress of dirt and dust with an IP40 rating. The terminal box features plug-in terminals to ensure easy and safe wiring, while the wires inside are separated from the shaft to prevent cables from becoming jammed or damaged.

The HOG840 features high C4 corrosion protection to DIN EN ISO 12944 standards and can operate in applications with temperatures ranging from -30C to 85C and cable lengths of up to 200m (HTL-P).

The HOG860 is designed for demanding applications on machines and asynchronous drives. It provides extended electrical protection, specialised parameterisation options, status monitoring, an extended operating temperature range from -40C to 100C, and CX corrosion protection.

The third option is the HOG870, a redundant heavy-duty encoder with redundant sensing and evaluation. It incorporates six additional outputs and is designed for safety-relevant applications. Also, for incremental signals, the HOG890 features three digital switches for long-distance transmissions of standstill, speed, direction, and status information to control units.
