AVX has introduced a single-contact version of its proven 9176 Series insulation displacement connectors (IDCs), which are widely recognized for providing highly-reliable, gas-tight wire-to-board connections in a range of harsh environment applications.
Backward compatible with existing 9176 Series connectors with regard to contact and footprint, the new 9176-65X single tine IDC contacts exhibit the same robust, reliable performance the series is known for while reducing cost by 25%, width by 50% (2.5mm vs. 5mm), and height by 10% (5.05mm vs. 5.6mm), the latter of which is especially valuable for SSL applications, as it helps prevent shadowing.
Designed to satisfy the demanding cost versus performance objectives for customers in the SSL, smart grid, smart meter, machine control, commercial building control, industrial control, medical, and transportation markets, the new 9176-65X Series contacts also feature a multipurpose cap that keeps the contacts in position prior to automatic placement and then acts as an assembly tool for terminating wires, effectively removing the costs associated with hand soldering, crimping, and two-piece connectors, says the company.
“When we initially developed the 9176 Series, the market demanded a current rating up to 10A, so we used dual IDC tines. Current market demands are largely in the 3–5A range, though, and we’re always up against market price pressure, so we developed the single tine 9176 IDC to satisfy lower current ratings and reduce costs,” said Tom Anderson, product manager, AVX. “Consequently, we were surprised when product testing for the new 9176-65X Series demonstrated that they can achieve up to 9A with an 18AWG wire. Normally, above-ambient temperatures limit current levels; so, the fact that we can achieve a 9A rating with a single tine is a real testimony to the high quality design of our IDCs, which yield less than 3mOhms of contact resistance, effectively mitigating heat build-up.”
Rated for 600VAC, 5–9A, and operating temperatures spanning -40C to +125C, the new 9176-65X Series contacts accept 24–18AWG wires, are available in two configurations for maximum flexibility (stopped end cap and through wire cap), and can be potted or over-moulded for waterproof performance. Tested to automotive levels of shock, vibration, and temperature cycling, the series is also RoHS-compliant and certified to both UL and CAN/CSA C22.2. Available for immediate product integration, the series is tape and reel packaged for single contact automated placement and SMT reflow, says the company.
