Farnell element14 now stocks Texas Instruments' TPS2474x series integrated ORing and hot-swap controllers for 2.5V to 18V systems. The devices offer precise and programmable protection settings that help the design of high-power, high-availability systems where isolating faults is critical. Features such as programmable current limit, fast shutdown and a fault timer protect the load and supply during fault conditions, such as a hot-short. The fast shutdown threshold and response time can be fine-tuned to ensure a fast response to real faults, while avoiding false positives that cause nuisance trips. Programmable safe operating area (SOA) protection and the inrush timer keep the MOSFET safe under all operating conditions. After confirming a power good, TPS2474x controllers run the fault timer during over-current events, but don't limit current. They shut down after the fault timer expires. Two independent timers (inrush and fault) allow the user to customise protection based on system requirements, while the O-ring function of the TPS2474x allows the user to program the reverse voltage threshold and response time. This aids in the design of redundant power supply systems. Typical applications include enterprise storage, power muxing, redundant power supplies and battery systems.
