The TPS65987D, from Texas Instruments, is a stand-alone USB Type-C and PD controller providing cable plug and orientation detection for a single USB Type-C connector.
The device communicates with the cable and another USB Type-C and PD device at the opposite end of the cable, allows integrated port power switch, manages an external high current port power switch, and negotiates alternate modes. The device may also control an attached super-speed multiplexer via GPIO or I2C to simultaneously support USB3.0/3.1 data rates and DisplayPort video.
The device is divided into five main sections: the USB-PD controller, the cable plug and orientation detection circuitry, the port power switches, the power management circuitry, and the digital core.
