Proximity sensor module provides accurate ambient light sensing

Available now from Mouser is the ams TMD2755 Proximity Sensor Module. This device features proximity detection and digital ambient light sensing (ALS).

The module provides a narrow 1.1mm module that includes an IR VCSEL and factory calibrated VCSEL driver. The proximity detection delivers object detection by photodiode detection of reflected IR energy. Detect/release events are interrupt-driven and happen when proximity result crosses upper and/or lower threshold settings. The proximity engine provides a wide range offset adjustment to compensate for unwanted IR energy reflection at the sensor. Proximity results are improved further by automatic ambient light subtraction. The ALS and IR photodiodes include dedicated data converters delivering 16-bit data. This architecture permits applications to accurately measure ambient light for devices to calculate illuminance to control display backlight.

Typical applications include mobile phone display management and mobile phone user proximity detection.
