Infineon Technologies has launched the new 650V TRENCHSTOP 5 WR6 family in a discrete housing. The family is supplied in a TO-247-3-HCC package and provides a broad portfolio comprising 20A, 30A, 40A, 50A, 60A and 70A current ratings. The devices can simply be utilised for replacing earlier technologies like the TRENCHSTOP 5 WR5 and HighSpeed 3 H3, as well as competitor technologies. The family is optimised for power factor correction (PFC) for residential and commercial air conditioning systems and welding applications.

The devices provide extremely low conduction losses (30A, 1,45V at 25C) and the lowest switching losses (30A, 1,55mJ at 175C). They provide a very low saturation voltage (VCE(sat)) of 1,45V and a monolithically integrated diode with optimised forward voltage for the destination applications. This results in best-in-class performance while allowing a low BOM cost. Furthermore, the device leverages the performance advantage of the TRENCHSTOP 5 WR5 series, the predecessor to the new series.

The new housing of the WR6 family raises the creepage and clearance distances, therefore improving the isolation voltage rating. With this, the product family enables more reliable system designs resistant to contamination and condensation, which, e.g., often occur at AC outdoor units. The TRENCHSTOP 5 WR6 reduces the total cost of ownership with less failure rate while enabling a higher switching frequency in the application.
