Measure extremely low amplitudes with a new microphone system

PCB Piezotronics has introduced a new Model 378A08 low-noise ¼” (6mm) diameter free-field microphone and preamplifier system with multiple sound field usage capability. The device measures to 25dBA within a low-profile prepolarised (0V) design.

Traditionally, smaller diameter microphones have lower sensitivity (0.25–2mV/Pa), which does not allow for lower amplitude testing. Compared to other ¼” mics, the device has an extremely high sensitivity rating of 50mV/Pa, which enables it to obtain noise floor specifications comparable to larger ½” (12mm) diameter microphones.

The device is multiple-field capable. Its reduced size minimises its impact on the sound field, particularly at higher frequencies, resulting in accurate data even when used in a sound field other than free-field, which it was designed for. This saves users the cost of buying multiple sensors for different types of sound fields.

The new model can be used for many low-noise test applications, including cabin noise testing for automotive and aerospace, electric vehicle testing, component testing, computer fan/disk drive/white goods noise testing, and general low-noise tests needing a small profile sensor.
